For
the week ending:

Here's your usual weekly roundup of the biggest RPG news stories. Actually, this week is more of a picture show. Still good.
N-Gage Just...Won't...Die
The DS is wowing masses with its touchscreen technology. The PSP has people addicted to games like Lumines and Untold Legends. The N-Gage doesn't have much going for it in the market...at all...but that's not stopping the people at Nokia from putting their best efforts and publishing new games. Two games, HinterWars: The Aterian Invasion and RIFTS: Promise of Power.
HinterWars has a pretty unique concept behind it. The game is Mobile Massively Multiplayer Online Game (3MOG) that allows gamers to play simultaneously with tens of thousands of others using either their Nokia N-Gage gamedeck or their PC, similar the way FFXI players from PS2 and PC can interact with each other. HinterWars: The Aterian Invasion was derived from an original storyline that revolves around a group of space-faring races that face the possibility of being invaded by the Aterians. The game features four broad character types – the Humans, Firans, Brucians and Taikuus – whose costumes, appearances and armour can be customized according to each player’s specifications. The game also allows interaction between players such as broadcast and private chat, trading of items and teaming up for conquests. Successes are rewarded by new downloads, rare items, additional power and experience, virtual cash rewards – and ultimately, fame within the HinterWars gaming community.
Players can download the HinterWars client for free onto their MMC card or PC from the official game website. Once the client is installed, the game can be shared with other gamers using the N-Gage gamedeck with a MMC card.
As for the second title, RIFTS: Promise of Power got an official website. Nokia says, "the first ever videogame of the world-renowned and
much-loved RIFTS pen-and-paper role-playing series from Palladium Books.
In RIFTS: Promise of Power, players get a classic mix of real time movement,
turn-based combat and a diverse party of adventurers in a variety of 3D
environments. The game also comes stacked with multi-player options that make
full use of the connectivity features of the N-Gage platform."
Perhaps these two new RPGs will help boost N-Gage sales and make it less of a financial loss for Nokia? Time will tell.
