Winner: Dragon Quest VIII (PS2)
If you're surprised by Dragon Quest VIII getting overall RPG of the year here or at any other RPG media place, you officially suck at predictions. This is not to say other games stood no chance, it's just that this game is clearly one that has been loved-up by media outlets all over like few other RPGs ever have. Now is when I link you to Orie's review of the game, as he says it much better than I do. I'd have him write this blurb, but I think the Minnesota Winter has ended him.

Runner up: Romancing SaGa (PS2)
Our runner-up here was Romancing SaGa, the "functional compilation" of the SaGa series, as the creators have called it. It took the style of an old series and truly perfected it, making it a real gift for SaGa fans as well as many newcomers. This was an overall fantastic game may have even taken Game of the Year, had it not been released opposite Dragon Quest VIII.

Honorable mention: Castlevania DS (DS)
The Castlevania series got all touchy-feely with Dawn of Sorrow this year. While that particular aspect of the game didn't set the world on fire, everything else about the game was well received.
