Yeah, the fact that this shit sucks so bad that someone went through the trouble of writing an un-patcher when you could obviously just redownload the rom is hilarity.
I'm so glad you guys posted this since I'm fucking sick of these animu fantranslator faggots. Phosphene Heretic made a good rant about this last week but I'm not digging it up since most of what he said you guys said, and I assume was just stolen from him anyways. _________________

It wasn't, but go ahead and pat him on the back anyway.
(Janelle and I actually spoke about this topic at length on the way back from our rad day in Pittsburgh just now.) _________________ If you buy stuff from Play Asia, help support RPG Land. Thank you. |

The guy that did this was just asking for flak, unfortunately, by merely touching one of the more hallowed games of the SNES generation. I can applaud the fact that he was willing to take a stab at something like this, and I've got a healthy respect for anybody who can hack text code
(including both technical and cosmetic stuff) from Japanese to English, but he was either careless or naive in promoting or publishing this and expecting people to receive it gladly.
The problem I see with this translation is that it's undertaking a mildly impossible task. Localization is something I find essential to translating a game, but clearly that's not what the project was going for. It was trying to let English players see the game the way Japanese players did, while still understanding it. That would imply a straight translation, but the way the grammar structures differ means that you're going to get your final text gibbled either way.
Leaving the English entirely intact wouldn't make much sense without throwing in your own grammatical measures, and it would kill the emotional impact of the game since it would sound so stilted. Trying to make the translated text make sense while keeping it literal results in the weird half-localization seen here, with ellipses, run on clauses and bizarrely theatrical sentences. Don't get me started on the honorifics.
The language barrier can be crossed, but straddling it is a little uncomfortable.
Localized text sans censorship can retain the original intent and meaning of the Japanese fairly literally without using the exact same words and phrases. I think making it purely literal was a mistake. |

Yeah, it was a waste of time to re-translate Chrono Triggers when there are other games far, far more deserving of retranslations such as Wild ARMs 2 and Paladin's Quest...and Japanese suffixes IMO have no place whatsoever in English dialogue, one of the things that really annoyed me about Persona 3. _________________ LiveJournal
